How Much Muscle Can I Gain?

I've seen people claim they gained 40 pounds of muscle over the course of two months. Hate to break it to you, but that isn't happening, even with steroids. In this article, I'm going to break it down and give you realistic expectations of how much muscle you can gain.

Now this is a multi-faceted question, so let's go over all of the factors at play:

  1. Genetics

  2. Time Spent Training (Years of experience)

  3. Natural/Enhanced (If you are using steroids)

  4. Diet/Sleep/Training

  5. Biological Sex

For simplicity, in this article I'm going to be going over those who are natural. Assuming your diet/training/sleep are all in order, then you can reasonably expect to gain around 6 to 15 pounds as a male of muscle in your first year of training and around 3 to 7 pounds as a female.

A very general rule of thumb is each year after the first, the amount of muscle you can gain is half that of the previous year. Depending on your genetics, you may fall on the lower end of the spectrum or on the higher end. You might even be beyond the ranges that I have provided above, the only way for you to know is to start training and find out. Good luck!
